5 New Year’s Resolutions that Can Improve Your Smile

Starting about 4,000 years ago, humans have been making resolutions about the upcoming year. Typically, these resolutions involve improving some aspect of your life, with the most common being to lose weight, make better financial decisions, and quit bad habits like smoking. New Year’s resolutions can be made to improve any aspect of your life, even your smile. Consider the following six New Year’s resolutions and see how they can help you take steps towards a healthier smile in 2018!

1. Commit to Reduce or Avoid Sugar

There is no doubt that sugar is one of the biggest culprits behind dental problems. Along with acids, excess sugar is responsible for cavities, tooth decay, gum disease, and other damaging dental conditions. Plus, with numerous other health problems shown to be caused by excess sugar, reducing your consumption is an excellent move for your overall health. By pledging to cut back on sugar in 2018, you’ll invariably end up with a whiter and healthier smile – and probably a slimmer waistline.

2. Resolve to Eat More Fruits and Vegetables

It’s a not-so-shocking fact that many of the natural foods that are best for you are good for your teeth as well. This includes carrots, apples, and strawberries, among other plant-based foods. Another advantage of fruits and veggies is that they lack the acids found in meats and the refined sugars found in many bread products. Whether you commit to a year of Meatless Mondays or go full-on vegan is your choice, but adding more plant-based foods will certainly improve your smile.

3. Pledge to Floss Everyday this Year

Recent surveys show that only 22% of Americans floss each day. Flossing can be an inconvenience to the average adult because they may feel that the process is messy, painful, or complicated. However, it’s the only way to get those crucial spots between your teeth. By making a commitment to be better at flossing, you’ll surely end up with a healthier, cleaner smile in 2018.

4. Never Skip a Brushing Session

There is no doubt that dental neglect is responsible for a wide range of problems, even among adults. The ADA recommends brushing twice per day for maximum oral health, so committing to meet this ideal for the New Year can mean a major increase in your oral health. If you’re bored with brushing, try a new toothbrush, a dental app, or an interesting new brand of toothpaste to add fun to the experience.

5. Resolve to Finally Get the Dental Care You’ve Been Needing

Stories of people who’ve gone three years without seeing the dentist and suddenly rush in when they get a toothache are fairly common. Some people have times in their lives where finances or other obligations keep them from giving adequate attention to their smiles. If you’ve been putting off urgently-needed dental care or even a cosmetic procedure, 2018 can be the year you give your smile the love it deserves.
