Porcelain Veneers: Hollywood Smiles for All

Did you know that porcelain veneers first began as a tool for celebrities to look their best back in the 1920s? Since then, veneers have made their way to dental offices across the world, offering a non-invasive, whitening-free way to make your smile appear more brilliant. Join Dr. Devang Shah and our team as we take a look at the history of this unique cosmetic dental treatment and how it can work for your smile here in Dacula, GA.

A Brief History of Veneers

The year was 1928 in Hollywood, CA. A local dentist named Dr. Charles Pincus was called upon by a studio to help make an actor’s teeth more presentable for a film shoot. At the time, sound was emerging in film for the first time, meaning that actors not only had to speak well, but that their teeth had to look good too. However, home dental care was not as advanced back then, and smoking, alcoholism, and other bad habits were quite prevalent. Dr. Pincus developed a veneer that could be temporarily placed on a patient’s teeth, but were only secured with a mild adhesive and had to be removed for eating, drinking, or sleeping.

With success, Dr. Pincus went on to experiment with this new acrylic veneer he fabricated, and put it into use again for other actors and actresses. His list of clientele included Shirley Temple, Walt Disney, Bob Hope, James Dean, Joan Crawford, and more. The veneers proved that cosmetic flaws like cracks, chips, yellowing, and other stains could be covered up with just a thin film of porcelain, and thus the “Hollywood smile” was born.

What Can Veneers Do?

Since then, porcelain veneers have evolved to last much more than a day, and can now be kept on for 10 years or more. But you may be asking yourself, how do veneers even work the way they do?

Veneers are thin shells of porcelain or acrylic that are either non-transparent or semi-transparent. They are secured to the front surface of a tooth via dental cement, keeping them long-lasting for years to come. The veneer allows a certain amount of light to pass through, depending on the thickness, which lights up your smile to a brilliant shine. They are typically used to cover up cosmetic flaws such as cracks, chips, and discoloration.

Lumineers for a Brilliant Smile

With typical veneers a small amount of enamel must be shaved off the front surface of the tooth, so that the veneer can be fitted comfortably. Otherwise, the veneer would be protruding on top of your natural tooth, which could irritate your lips and be less secure.

Here at Dental Smiles at Dacula, Dr. Devang Shah trusts Lumineers by Cerinate to help his patients achieve their dream smiles. Lumineers are veneers that are made to be as thin as a contact lens. Dr. Shah prefers Lumineers, as these types of veneers do not require any shaving of enamel to fit a thicker veneer. In spite of the thinner veneer, they are no different in brilliance from any other veneer.
